Cigar Forum

October 27, 2004

Here's a way to keep entertained while at work. This is a forum for cigar smokers - there seem to be a lot of good people on it and a lot of information about cigars and all that they encompass.

November 13th Smoker

My CAO rep, Jeff, was in earlier today and said for the CAO Event on Saturday, Nov. 13, we'd have cigars to hand out, about 125 meerschaum pipes to browse for purchase, CAO pipe tobacco to sample (bring your pipe...or buy one here!). This should be a great show and I hope you all can attend.

Gran Habano scores!

October 26, 2004

The new Cigar Aficianado will be hitting the stores soon and, as a way of preview, I'd like to turn your attention to the Gran Habano Corojo Pyramid No. 5, which scores a 90 from the good tasters at the magazine. "A supple, oily wrapper covers this cigar. The draw is slightly loose, but the flavor is spicy and earthy, with ginger and orange peel notes. Full-bodied and complex," they go on to write.

Since adding the Gran Habano line of cigars earlier this year I have really seen their sales take off. This is truly a quality cigar at a great price. The Corojo No. 5 mentioned above sells for only $5/stick. That's a $90 box of cigars! Come in today and try one. And if full-bodied isn't to your liking, then try the mild No. 1's or the medium No. 3's.

Congratulations, again, to Tony, Craig, and all the fine folks at STC Cigars and Gran Habano for their 90 rating.

Writing Instruments

Certain things seem to belong in a smoke shop. Whether it's newspapers, pocket knives or haberdashery, some articles just seem to lend themselves to the environment of all things manly. Along that line, I've recently added the Cross Writing Instruments line of fine pens and pen refills. Of course, I couldn't add the entire line, but I believe I got a nice cross (no pun) section of their offerings, from your everyday pocket pen to a fine fountain pen. If it's not here, it's easy enough for me to order what you may need. And, as always, if there's something you'd like to see in stock here, then please let me know. Come by and see these beautiful pieces.

(Oh, and I have pocket knives as well...)

Capstan

October 16, 2004

Some of you may remember Capstan pipe tobacco. It is a wonderful Virginia flake that used to be plentiful here until they stopped exporting to this country. Several years ago some of the tobacco manufacturers in Europe decided the threat of litigation in this country wasn't worth the sales. As a result, many pipe smokers were left in a lurch for something to smoke. Luckily, I found the Solani brand, namely Solani #633, a wonderful blend of Virginia and Perique in a flake cut. But thanks to Elizabeth & Toby, recently returned from Florence, Italy, for bringing me some Capstan flake. It's like visiting with an old friend.

I'm not sure what 'Il fumo uccide' means, but I can only assume it means 'Tasty treat' in Italian.

General Cigars

October 13, 2004

generalship.jpg

The good people of General Cigar have just shipped a large portion of my RTDA Show order. Come in and try the Sancho Panza, Sancho Panza Double Maduro, and the Punch Gran Puro. These cigars are all considered medium- to full-bodied but, as usual, you should judge that for yourself. I recommend the Punch Gran Puro as it is a remarkably smooth cigar for being so full-bodied. The Sancho Panza Double Maduro is smooth as well and a very good deal with the price ranging from $3.25 - $4.75. Sancho Panza also has a nice little tin of 10 cigars for only $6.99!

Here's my offer: come in and mention you read it here, purchase 3 of any of these cigars and receive a 4th cigar of equal or lesser value FREE! Mix and match these brands and sizes.

Faulkner lit up

October 11, 2004

Writer, historian and true genteel Southerner, Shelby Foote stopped in last Friday to pick up his tobacco and also needed a new Zippo lighter. While he looked at the lighters I mentioned that a lot of pipe smokers don't use Zippos because they can taste the lighter fluid. Mr. Foote responded, "William Faulkner had nothing but contempt for cigarette lighters." It's wonderful to be in a situation where you can get a little nugget like that from someone who actually witnessed it and didn't need to read it in a book or magazine article.

Anyone interested in Shelby Foote's tobacco blend can come in, mention you read this blog entry, and receive 2 oz. FREE.

Smoking Lounge

October 09, 2004

Many of you who have been in here at the Tobacco Bowl know of the 'room upstairs'. This is the space that was used for storage for, oh, probably 30 years or so, but which I have been threatening to fix up into an expanded sitting, smoking and relaxing space for the past 5 years. Well, that time is now...almost. I've just recently had it painted by our fine Scottish friend, Gordon Davidson (901.859.8590), who you should all call if you need any painting or carpentry done. I'm in the process now of fine-tuning the space, furnishing it, etc., to make it a real attraction for all of you. Winter is coming on and soon it will be too cold to sit out on the back patio for a fine cigar, so I will be inviting you all in to my living room to make yourselves comfortable. Stay tuned for more!
