Cigar Reviews

April 06, 2005

Here are a few reviews by our very own cigar savant, JB. He's big, he's bald, he puts out fires with his bare hands and he's a Cubs fan. Now see what he has to say about the Rocky Patel, H. Upmann and Camacho cigars.

Rocky Patel 1990 Corona

Rocky Patel has scored a hit with his Vintage 1990 line of cigars.
These Honduran blend cigars are wrapped with a chocolate-smooth, 12-year
aged Broadleaf wrapper. The cigars sport a firm box press, a
silky wrapper, and a firm draw. The construction is near perfect, and
the cigars are nicely dressed with a signature maroon and gold band.
The cigar burns evenly with a plume of thick grey smoke. Smoked
slowly, it remains cool and pleasant, even down to the end. The
slighty sweet aged maduro wrapper mixes well with the Honduran filler
to provide a medium bodied smoke, great for any time of the day.

H. Upmann Vingage Cameroon Corona

Move over Don Carlos, here comes the H. Upmann Vintage Cameroon!
Though I'm partial to Fuente products, especially the Don Carlos, this
Cameroon-wrapped beauty is a great cigar at an even better price.
Packed in sturdy cedar chests, the cigars present beautifully with the
traditional Upmann band and a caramel colored wrapper. A well made
cigar, hardly a vein graces it's surface. The draw is loose, with a
full volume of smoke. A mild/medium bodied cigar, the cameroon
wrapper provides just the right amount of spice to pair this corona
I'm smoking now with a steaming latte. The Upmann burns clean and
stays pleasant til the end. A classic in the making.

Camacho SLR Maduro Rothschild

The Camcho SLR Rothschild Maduro was recently rated a 90 by Cigar
Aficionado Magazine, and dubbed as one of the top 25 cigars of 2004.
As I sit here with what's left of this one, I can see why! This rich,
Honduran maduro by Christian Eiroa is one of the best cigars to come
out of Honduras. Not to discount my favorite Honduran, the Camacho
11/18, but this smooth, chocolate maduro is hard to beat.
Construction is slightly rustic, and gives no indication as to the
easy draw, and smooth creamy cocoa flavor that lies beneath. The
rothschild is a solid 45 minute to an hour of pure bliss. Hints of
cocoa and spice hit the palate from the first puff, and it burns
straight as a razor down to the nub. This solidly medium-bodied
beauty is a real value cigar as well, outperforming many other higher
priced cigars. If you like Honduran cigars, you've got to try the
Camacho SLR Maduro Rothschild.
